Bike packing the Empire State Gravel trail from NYC to Hudson on a beautiful fall weekend is an unforgettable experience!
Planning:
Dozens of group texts (led by our noble leader Alex and his packing experience) ensured that we had the right equipment, frame bags and packed correctly (minimally) for our first bike pack adventure.
Three of us set out from our respective Brklyn / FiDi and Midtown front doors on a perfect fall Friday, the bustling NYC landscape gradually giving way to the tranquil beauty of nature once we passed through Yonkers. The crisp fall air filled our lungs, invigorating us for the journey ahead.
Our route was a very realistic c. 65 miles per day for two days to Brewster, and then Kingston for overnight stops, with a shorter 40 mile day 3 to Hudson before taking the train home.
The trail winds through scenic parks and charming small towns, with the vibrant foliage painting the surroundings in rich fall colors. Each pedal stroke became a celebration of the season, with leaves crunching under your tires and the sun casting a warm glow on the path ahead. We kept referencing the weather Gods who were thankfully very much on our side….conditions could not have been more perfect as we had heard stories from others of rains, low temps and winds that would have resulted in a very different experience.
Along the way, we encountered quaint roadside farms and picturesque views of the Hudson River that we crossed twice and which never ceased to amaze with its volume, size and history. The smell of fresh apples and baked goods from local stands impossible to resist, and stopping for a snack becomes part of the adventure.
Hudson is stunning – a great historic town, with its artsy vibe and welcoming atmosphere, offered a perfect end to our ride. Whether you choose to explore the local shops, grab a bite at a cozy café, or simply enjoy the riverside views, the sense of accomplishment from the ride set in as we enjoyed the best food on the trip at The Maker Hotel.
Notes:
Accomodation is expensive and very average
Really not sure what the ‘best’ in Best Western stands for?
Make sure you reserve your return journey on the train WITH a bike ticket!
Watch the weather and pack light.
